Hanoi eyes Minsk motorcycle show to boost ties with Belarus

Belarus is strengthening local cooperation, cultural exchange, and investment, with a spotlight on a proposed Minsk motorcycle performance race in Hanoi.

THE HANOI TIMES — Hanoi may soon witness an exhilarating motorcycle Minsk stunt show after Belarusian Ambassador Uladzimir Baravikou proposed it during a meeting with Deputy Chairman of Hanoi People's Committee Nguyen Manh Quyen on April 15.

The event, scheduled for either April 30 (Reunification Day) or September 2 (National Day), will feature professional Belarusian riders making daring public demonstrations in Hanoi, showcasing the distinctive Minsk motorbikes that are nostalgic to many Vietnamese.

Quyen expressed strong support for the initiative, describing Minsk motorcycles as "legendary" in Vietnam's collective memory. He instructed relevant departments to examine the proposal and ensure proper coordination for what could become a major cultural event that strengthens ties between the two capitals.

The discussion took place as part of broader talks on strengthening cooperation between Hanoi and Minsk. A high-level delegation from Hanoi is preparing to visit Belarus on May 5-13 this year, coinciding with the official trip of the General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam, To Lam. The visit will include cultural exchanges, government meetings, and business promotion activities.

Ambassador Baravikou also proposed the installation of statues of Belarusian cultural figures in Hanoi's Peace Park, which would be reciprocated by a statue of Ho Chi Minh in Minsk. A business conference is also planned to bring together companies from both countries.

The potential motorcycle spectacle represents a creative approach to cultural diplomacy between Vietnam and Belarus, whose friendship dates back to the Soviet era. With enthusiasm from both sides, the event could soon become a reality, offering Hanoi residents a unique blend of sports entertainment and international camaraderie.
