Hanoi needs to act more to lure investment to develop satellite urban areas

The Hanoi People`s Committee has approved four out of the five zoning plans for satellite urban areas with a total area of 20,388.3 ha.

Hanoi needs more actions to mobilize resources to develop satellite urban areas according to Hanoi’s general planning for 2030, with a vision to 2050, local media reported.

Under the planning, Hanoi in the future will consist of a cluster of urban areas including the metropolitan area and five satellite cities, which are Hoa Lac, Son Tay, Xuan Mai, Phu Xuyen - Phu Minh and Soc Son.

It is expected that the satellite urban areas with harmonious system of technical and social infrastructure, will ease downtown overpopulation and avoid the concentration of schools, factories and hospitals in the inner city.

The main functions of the five satellite urban areas are specified in the approved planning for Hanoi in 2011 as follows:

1. Hoa Lac satellite urban area is located west of Hanoi’s downtown, with an estimated population of 600,000 and will be a town of science-technology and training with the main goal of developing highly qualified human resources and relocating people from downtown.

2. Xuan Mai satellite urban area is located to the west of Hanoi’s downtown and will be home to 220,000 people. The town will focus on service and industry, industrial clusters and link Hanoi with the northwestern provinces of Vietnam.

3. Phu Xuyen satellite urban area to the south of Hanoi’s downtown, with an estimated population of about 127,000 will be an industrial center, a transport and a cargo transshipment hub.

Factories, schools, entertainment and sport facilities will be built in Phu Xuyen to serve neighboring economic zones.

4. Son Tay satellite urban area to the northwest Hanoi’s center, with an estimated population of 186,000 will be a historical and cultural center and a resort town.

5. Soc Son satellite urban area to the north of Hanoi’s inner city, with an estimated population of about 250,000, will be home to an aviation service center, commercial services, international logistics and transshipment, regional trade and tourism services, clean industries and regional training services.

The Hanoi People's Committee has approved four out of the five zoning plans for satellite urban areas (Son Tay, Xuan Mai, Phu Xuyen, Soc Son) with a total area of 20,388.3 ha.

In the near future, the city will develop a transport system connecting downtown among the satellite urban areas, these areas with downtown and surrounding residential areas.

The satellite urban areas are expected to reduce dense demographic concentration in downtown and enhance sustainable development, with a view to building a "green, civilized and modern" capital city.
