Hanoi promotes waste treatment businesses to build green city

With a population of 10 million, waste treatment has become an urgent issue for Hanoi on its path to becoming a sustainable city.

Hanoi authorities will facilitate all investors in the waste treatment sector to improve living standards for local people, the city mayor said on March 1.

With a population of 10 million people, Hanoi produces a gigantic amount of waste, particularly plastic waste, said Hanoi People's Committee chairman Tran Sy Thanh.

"Waste treatment is among the top priorities for Hanoi as the city wants to develop a green, sustainable urban area. Hanoi welcomes the ideas concerning waste treatment, and the city pledges to facilitate all related projects," he said.

The chairman said that Hanoi would provide the best support for partners and businesses with advantages in technology and finance working in the waste treatment sector.

Axel Schweitzer, CEO of Alba Group Asia, is one of the world's leading companies in waste treatment. The company has operated plants in Asian countries like China, Singapore, and Thailand.

Alba Group hopes to expand its operation in Vietnam and Hanoi in particular, he said, adding that plastic wastes are a useful resource that can be recycled and reused for various purposes.

Alba Group Asia wants to contribute to improving living qualities for the people of Hanoi and assist the city to better perform in waste treatment and smart city development, Axel said.
He added that he expects to receive strong support and information from the municipal authorities to implement potential waste treatment projects.

The representing executive of VietCycle, partner of Alba Group Asia, expected that Hanoi would improve conditions for domestic and international companies to operate in waste treatment.

He affirmed that VietCycle and Alba Group are determined to assist the city in developing a green, healthy environment.

Concluding the meeting, Hanoi chairman Thanh directed subordinate agencies to work with Alba Group and VietCyle to study the conditions of Hanoi's waste treatment.
