Hanoi shines among the happiest cities in Asia and the World in 2025

The Vietnamese capital now stands alongside iconic urban centers such as Mumbai, Beijing and Shanghai - a testament to its unique charm and growing global recognition.

THE HANOI TIMES — Hanoi has for the first time entered the top 10 happiest cities in Asia and the top 20 in the world, according to the 2025 Urban Quality of Life Survey by Time Out.

This year, more than 18,000 residents across Asia shared their thoughts on what makes life in their cities joyful, in terms of culture, cuisine, nightlife, community spirit and overall quality of life, painting a rich portrait of urban happiness across the continent.

“Some indices look at stuff like environment, economy and health, all very important. But then there are the little things: a sense of community in your neighborhood, for example, or a city’s green space and nature, art and culture and even its beauty,” The Time Out wrote.

Hanoi’s charm lies in the quiet joy of everyday life, as 88% of residents said they feel happy living in the city, finding contentment in small moments, from a morning coffee at a sidewalk café to an evening walk around Hoan Kiem Lake. Happiness in Hanoi is not about grandeur but about rhythm, warmth and connection.

As resident Dao Nguyen Ha Linh, 36, said: “Hanoi’s magic is in the small moments: the aroma of street food, the calm of a temple bell, the sunset over West Lake. It’s a city where life feels complete yet unhurried, simple yet deeply fulfilling.”

Hanoi’s happiness is shaped by mindful urban planning. The city has invested in green spaces, public facilities and community programs that strengthen connection and belonging. Visitors can stroll along tree-lined boulevards, explore bustling markets or join lively cultural festivals.

Time Out recommends travelers immerse themselves in the Old Quarter’s vibrant streets, sip local beer while watching daily life unfold, and enjoy a traditional water puppet show. Iconic sites such as the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum, Hoa Lo Prison Relic, Temple of Literature, Ngoc Son Temple and Hoan Kiem Lake offer vivid glimpses into the city’s rich history and culture.

Ranking among Asia’s five happiest cities reflects Hanoi’s transformation into a dynamic capital that blends modern living with cultural depth, friendliness and calm. These traits, now recognized as hallmarks of well-being, make Hanoi a city that feels both authentic and alive.

Globally, Hanoi now stands 17th among the world’s 20 happiest cities, the only representative from Vietnam. For visitors, the ranking is more than a number, it signals a place where heritage, lifestyle and joy converge, leaving lasting impressions long after the journey ends.
