Hanoi among Vietnam’s top five destinations for short getaways

The capital city of Vietnam is making waves as one of the country’s most popular destinations for short, spontaneous getaways, according to global travel platform Agoda's latest report.

THE HANOI TIMES — As the heart of Vietnam, where ancient streets have modern energy, Hanoi is quickly becoming a shining star in the growing micro-travel trend, offering travelers an unforgettable cultural experience in just one night.

From wandering the lantern-lit alleys of the Old Quarter to enjoying a steaming bowl of pho at dawn to taking in a traditional performance at the Hanoi Opera House, the city proves that 24 hours can leave a lasting impression. Boasting French colonial architecture, peaceful lakes, bustling markets, and world-class cuisine, Hanoi packs centuries of history and charm into every street corner.

"It's my third time in Vietnam, but my first proper night in Hanoi," said Lisa Graham, a British traveler who recently spent a weekend in the capital. "I only had one free night between flights, and honestly, I didn’t expect to be so swept away. The atmosphere here is electric yet elegant. I wish I’d come sooner.”

Lisa is not the one who feels attached to Hanoi in just a short time.

With tight schedules and limited vacation, travelers are embracing “micro-travel” – quick, low-stress trips offering adventure without long planning, making it a good choice for modern wanderers.

"Vietnam's diversity in scenery, cities, and culture makes it ideal for short getaways," said Vu Ngoc Lam, Agoda's Country Director. “Micro-travel lets people explore more without the stress of long planning or high costs. Whether it’s a coastal town or a bustling metropolis like Hanoi, there’s something for everyone just a click away.”

For international travelers like Lisa, the convenience is part of the appeal. “I booked my Hanoi stay on the travel app at the Danang airport, and it took only a few minutes,” she said. "By evening, I was sipping egg coffee near Hoan Kiem Lake and watching locals dance by the water. You can’t script that kind of magic.”

Agoda’s booking data from the first five months of 2025 reveals the top five destinations in Vietnam for micro-travel adventures: the commercial hub of Ho Chi Minh City; the central coastal city of Danang; the capital city of Hanoi; the southern beach city of Vung Tau; and Dalat, a “dreamy” city in the Central Highlands.
