Hanoi targets to enlarge e-commerce share

Hanoi’s e-business index (EBI) is expected to keep its second rank nationwide this year.

Hanoi targets e-commerce sales to account for 9% of the city’s total retail sales of goods and services in 2019, up one percentage point year-on-year.

Additionally, Hanoi’s e-business index (EBI) is expected to keep its second rank nationwide, stated the Hanoi People’s Committee in its plan on e-commerce development in 2019, which was released last week.

Under the plan, Hanoi set the rate of people shopping online at 68% of the total having access to the internet, up two percentage points year-on-year.

Meanwhile, 85% of retailers and 25% gas stations would accept non-cash payment for their services, and 95% of enterprises operating in Hanoi have websites.

The plan also targets 80% of all chains of agricultural production in Hanoi to apply QR codes for tracing origins and providing transparency for consumers, while 10,000 suppliers would join e-commerce platforms selling safe and genuine organic farm products.

To achieve these target, Hanoi gives priority on the development of QR codes application for agricultural products traceability, as well as expanding the presence of e-commerce platforms.

The city encourages and supports business households and enterprises using e-commerce for market expansion, for which Hanoi would focus on developing e-logistics and enhancing efficiency of transport network within the city and in connection with other provinces and cities.

Facilitating non-cash payment transactions at modern retail networks, gas stations and in online shopping is another measure to enhance e-commerce in the city.

At national level, Vietnam’s e-commerce sales are forecast to reach US$10 billion by 2020, accounting for 5% of total retail and services revenue, while 30% of the population will shop online, spending an average of US$350 per person annually.

Vietnam’s e-commerce market has witnessed high growth rate since 2013, with online sales increasing from US$2.2 billion in 2013 to US$6.2 billion in 2017, averaging annual growth rate of 20%.
