Hanoi to spend US$3 million on Tet 2026 gifts to needy people

This is an annual activity that Hanoi organizes to help workers enjoy a happy Tet holiday and to show the city’s care for its workforce.

THE HANOI TIMES — The Vietnam Fatherland Front (VFF) Committee of Hanoi has proposed allocating nearly VND80 billion (US$3 million) to present around 90,000 gifts to near-poor households and those in especially difficult circumstances across the city on the occasion of the 2026 Tet holiday.

Specifically, VND5.28 billion (US$201,000) for 5,280 gift packages will come from the municipal “For the Poor” Fund, with each gift package valued at VND1 million (US$38) for the upcoming Lunar New Year.

In addition to resources from the above-mentioned fund, the committee will host various activities to support union members and workers facing difficulties during Tet. It is estimated that nearly 84,000 gift packages worth around VND74.5 billion ($2.8 million) will be distributed.

A key highlight of the program will be the “Compassionate Spring - Sharing Tet” event, scheduled for February 5 in the city's outskirt commune of Thuong Tin. The event aims to provide gifts to vulnerable groups while promoting the spirit of compassion and solidarity in the community.

Beneficiaries include policy families, ethnic minority workers and people who have not returned home for many years or are required to maintain on duty during the holiday. Priority will go to those facing hardship, workplace accidents, illness, job loss, reduced working hours or unpaid wages and bonuses.

The municipal authorities will also roll out various practical initiatives during the major holiday, including online Tet markets, visits and gift-giving to people with meritorious services, Tet visits to armed forces units on duty, among others.

More than 6 million Vietnamese to receive cash gifts

More than 6.2 million people across Vietnam, including residents with meritorious service, social protection beneficiaries and other vulnerable groups, will receive a cash gift of VND400,000 ($15) per person for the 14th National Party Congress and Lunar New Year celebrations.

The Hanoi Women's Union presented gifts to disadvantaged families during the 2025 Tet holiday.

The Ministry of Finance confirmed that it has fully transferred the governmental funds of VND2.513 trillion ($95.6 million) to provinces and cities for gift-giving programs marking the 14th National Party Congress (scheduled to take place in Hanoi from January 19 to 25) and Tet holiday (mid-February).

Local authorities are tasked with distributing the gifts correctly, transparently and on time.

In total, 6.3 people are set to benefit, including 1.6 people with meritorious service to the revolution and 4.6 social protection and social pension beneficiaries.

The Lunar New Year is Vietnam’s most important traditional holiday, marked by family reunions, cultural activities and travel nationwide.
