Hanoi launches tree-planting campaign for 2026

The campaign highlights the ecological value of tree planting and afforestation as a catalyst for socio-economic development, raising public awareness of forest development and urban greening.

THE HANOI TIMES — Hanoi has launched a citywide tree-planting campaign for 2026, linking urban greening with environmental protection and climate goals.

Under a directive signed on December 23 by Chairman of the municipal People's Committee Vu Dai Thang, the campaign highlights the role of trees in socio-economic development, environmental resilience and efforts to reduce CO2 and greenhouse gas emissions, supporting the city’s net-zero ambition.

Key measures include restoring trees and greenery in urban areas and parks damaged by storms, expanding tree cover along newly built roads, especially Ring Road 4 and planting trees on vacant land across the capital.

The city will mobilize resources to afforest forestry land that lacks tree cover and encourage each household to plant one to two trees of different species.

In 2026, Hanoi targets planting more than 700,000 trees, including about 320,000 shade and timber trees and around 350,000 fruit trees along urban roads, at government offices, parks, hospitals, schools and residential areas.

The plan also includes establishing 20 to 30 hectares of new production forests while continuing the management and protection of special-use and protective forests to maintain stable forest coverage.

Tree planting campaign is held each Lunar New Year with participation from authorities and residents across the city, contributing to notable gains in urban greening and afforestation in recent years.

In this regard, local authorities are asked to raise public awareness of the role of greenery, its long-term benefits and the shared responsibility of planting, caring for and protecting trees.

The campaign is a long-standing tradition that helps expand green coverage in a capital among those most affected by climate change.

As part of its goal to develop Hanoi into a green - civilized - modern city, tree planting and the maintenance of the urban greenery system remain a key task in the city’s annual socio-economic development plans.
