Hanoi to work out master plan for underground space

According to experts, if being used effectively, underground space in Hanoi would bring large amounts of money for the state budget.

Chairman of the Hanoi People's Committee has issued a dispatch on a general plan for underground space, local media reported.

The Department of Planning and Architecture will be the standing agency in devising the general construction scheme and submit to the municipal People's Committee for the approval of the technical planning standards for urban subdivision projects in four inner city districts which are Ba Dinh, Hoan Kiem, Dong Da, and Hai Ba Trung.

Besides, the Department of Planning and Architecture is requested to to elaborate the project for new-style rural communes.

Many cities in the world such as Moscow, Berlin, Paris, Tokyo, London, Seoul have built and exploited effectively many urban underground space and make profit from it while the one in Hanoi remains untapped potential.

In those cities, the underground space houses trade and service centers and parking lots, contributing to reducing congestion.

According to experts, if being used effectively, underground space in big cities like Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh city would bring large amounts of money for the state budget.

Together with the advancement of science and technology, underground spaces in separate building could be linked to each other to be better exploited.

Therefore, underground space and ground surface should be harmoniously developed in the overall three-dimensional urban space to create a synchronous, modern and comfortable urban space.
