Hanoi-Vientiane cooperation remains role model in bilateral relations

Both sides continue to strengthen cooperation in various fields, including trade, investment, and culture.

Hanoi and Vientiane, as national capitals, lead by example in local cooperation, sharing of expertise and cross-sectoral support to strengthen the special Vietnam-Laos relationship and meet the expectations of their leaders and people.

In 2024, Laos has demonstrated remarkable efforts as ASEAN Chair. Tở date, Laos has effectively implemented its agenda under the theme "ASEAN: Enhancing Connectivity and Resilience," notably with the successful organization of the 57th ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting (AMM 57) in July. The adoption of the AMM 57 Joint Statement is a significant achievement for Laos under its ASEAN Chairmanship.

Building on this success, the 2024 Meeting of Governors and Mayors of ASEAN Capitals (MGMAC) and the ASEAN Mayors Forum (AMF), held from September 17-19 in Vientiane, emerged as another highlight. The Chairman of the Hanoi People’s Committee Tran Sy Thanh, led Hanoi’s delegation to the event.

Prior to the meetings, the Hanoi Chairman met with Anouphap Tounalom, Secretary of the Central Committee, Party Secretary, and Chairman of the People’s Council of Vientiane, and  Athsaphangthong Siphandone, Central Committee Member and Mayor of Vientiane.

Both sides reviewed their cooperation under the 2022-2025 Agreement between the  Party Committees and Administrations of  Hanoi and Vientiane. They exchanged updates on socio-economic developments, including positive trade growth, cultural and social progress, and FDI attraction.

As capitals, Hanoi and Vientiane continue to take the lead in local cooperation, fostering close coordination, information exchange, and mutual support in all areas. Their efforts are aimed at enhancing the achievements of their partnership to match the special Vietnam-Laos relationship and meet the expectations of their leaders and people.

First launched in 2012, the MGMAC and AMF serve as regional platforms for local leaders to connect, strengthen cooperation, and address common challenges. The 2024 forums focused on five key areas: sustainable and livable cities, green tourism, sustainable economic development, environmental sustainability, and climate resilience. Participants shared insights and policies on implementing practical solutions.

In his opening remarks, Vientiane Mayor Athsaphangthong Siphandone welcomed delegations from ASEAN capitals and scholars and highlighted Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, as the next host of the MGMAC and AMF in 2025. He emphasized the forums’ importance in promoting development, sharing best practices, and addressing urban challenges while advancing the commitment of ASEAN cities to connectivity and resilience.

Amid complex global and regional dynamics, Laos has shown a strong dedication to ASEAN's objectives, including unity, centrality, economic cooperation, digital transformation, climate action, and enhanced partnerships.

Vietnam has actively supported Laos during its ASEAN Chairmanship, reflecting their special solidarity and cooperation. Through various forms of assistance, including material and knowledge sharing, Vietnam has underscored its role as a close ally and reliable partner of Laos.

The "ASEAN Friendship Colors" cultural festival, co-organized by the Hanoi Union of Friendship Organizations and the Lao Embassy, was also a success. The event celebrated   ASEAN's 57th anniversary, Vietnam’s 79th National Day, the 70th anniversary of Hanoi’s liberation, and the 25th anniversary of Hanoi's designation as a "City for Peace" by UNESCO. It aimed to strengthen friendship among ASEAN nations and showcase their cultural heritage.

The achievements of 2024 not only confirm Laos’s leadership and position but also contribute to ASEAN’s sustainable development, stability, and growth in the region.
