Inauguration of Vietnam's first garbage power plant

On April 24, the first industrial waste treatment plant of Vietnam (Nedo Factory) has been inaugurated and put into use at the Nam Son Waste Treatment Complex (Soc Son, Hanoi).

The Nedo Factory Project is built on an area of 16,809m2 located in Nam Son Commune (Soc Son District, Hanoi) with a total investment of over VND 645 billion. All plant equipment and technology are provided and delivered by Hitachi Zosen (Japan) able of consuming 75 tonnes of garbage per day to  generate 1.93 megawatts of electricity. This is considered to be the pioneering project in the process of treating industrial waste in Vietnam and the South East Asia region.

The first 1.93 megawatts were produced last March 16 of which  1.2 MW for the national power grid and the remaining serving the own operation of the plant. At present, the Nedo Factory fully meets the criteria of the manufacturer and the current Vietnamese environment standards.

Speaking at the ceremony, Vice Chairman of Hanoi People's Committee Nguyen Doan Toan emphasized: "This is not only the first project in Vietnam and the region, transforming waste into electricity but also symbolizing friendship between Vietnam and Japan. It is one of the important steps in the effort to protect the environment and recycle waste for industrial development purposes in Hanoi." It is expected that the plant will be completely transferred to Urenco, the Hanoi Urban Environment company, in October.
