Joining hands to protect environment from the smallest activity
Instead of a plastic glove, woman and housewives should move using the bag and basket which are made of natural ingredients and easy to destroy, Chairman of Hanoi People`s Committee Nguyen Duc Chung urged at the ceremony on June 5 to kick start a series of activities in response to the 2016 World Environment Day.
The Hanoi People’s Committee hosted a ceremony on June 5 to kick start a series of activities in response to the 2016 World Environment Day which is marked in Vietnam under theme “Nature’s Call and Our Actions”.
Attending the launching ceremony were Permanent Deputy Secretary of the Hanoi Party Committee Ngo Thi Thanh Hang and Chairman of the municipal People's Committee Nguyen Duc Chung.
According to the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), World Environment Day (June 5) aims to inspire people around the world to take action to prevent the strain on Earth’s natural systems from reaching breaking point.
Addressing the ceremony,Chairman Nguyen Duc Chung noted that the World Environment Day initiated in the early 70s of the last century has increasingly reached positive and effective results.
People of more than 100 countries worldwide have enthusiastically responded to the event, including Vietnam, he said.
This year’s theme is the fight against illegal wildlife trade, which erodes the precious biodiversity and threatens the survival of awe-inspiring species, such as elephants, rhinos and tigers, as well as other creatures that are less celebrated.
The launching ceremony in response to World Environment Day 2016 kicked off an array of activities in "Environmental Action Month" held throughout the city.
Chairman Nguyen Duc Chung shared that many local residents certainly are keen to Hanoi's streets such as Phan Dinh Phung, Hoang Dieu and Tran Phu streets that are very cool and green.
Hanoi city targets to plant about 1 million trees and build 25 parks, he noted.
The Hanoi leader called for businesses and residents to change their habits and current consumptions to save water and electricity, limit the generation of waste in daily activities.
The Chairman said that planting more new trees and taking care present trees do not only embellish Hanoi city, the peaceful capital, they are the air filters for all people.
"Please acting today, right now, each people plants a tree to bring a healthy lung, each landfill collected and further processed lead to hundreds, thousands and millions of healthy lungs, and there are millions of healthy hearts if we have clean water, food and environment", Chairman Nguyen Duc Chung stressed.
The Chairman urged local authorities at all levels, businesses and residents to join hands to protect the environment with specific activities.
The municipal leader expressed his wish that by 2018, all households in the city will not use firewood and take practical activities to protect the environment.
During the event, Chairman Nguyen Duc Chung also announced to the public the city’s website for environment protection at “thudoxanhsachdep.gov.vn”.
After the event, the city’s leaders, delegates and youths together planted trees and cleaned public places around Hoan Kiem Lake.
On the same day, 30 districts and towns of Hanoi city kicked off their activities in response to World Environment Day. Their residents planted trees, collected waste, cleaned sewage and removed illegal wall advertisements.
About 100 youths from the municipal Department of Environment and Natural Resources, youth unions of the city’s agencies and volunteer clubs participated in a cycling parade around main streets in Hanoi to call for a joint effort of local community to protect the environment.
Earlier on June 4, Hanoi planted 1,000 ban (Bauhinia Variegata) trees along Vo Nguyen Giap street as part of the plan to grow 1 million trees for 2016-2020 in the city.
Ban flower is typical to the northern mountainous region of Vietnam, often in blossom in spring.
