National University-HCM urged to become regional institution

President Truong Tan Sang has asked the Viet Nam National University - Ho Chi Minh City (VNU-HCM) to take a leading role in the country’s university system and become a regional educational institution.

State President Truong Tan made the statement when attending a ceremony marking the 20thanniversary of the VNU-HCM in Ho Chi Minh City on January 27.

The ceremony also saw the presence of Deputy Prime Minister Vu Duc Dam and leaders from ministries and agencies.

President Sang praised the university’s achievements and urged the VNU-HCM to continue to enhance fundamental improvements to better the quality of human resources trained.

The VNU-HCM should continue to renew curriculums and methodology, promote creativity and activeness in training and improve the quality of scientific studies, President Sang said.

To realize the above-mentioned tasks, the university should develop a competent staff, boost international relations and linkages with other universities and academies in the country, enhance social involvement in education and training and gradually implement its autonomy in all fields.

The VNU-HCM was established on January 27, 1995 by merging nine universities in southern region. It is a member of the Association of Universities of the Francophone (AUF), the ASEAN University Network (AUN) and the Eurocom of six leading European technical universities.

The university has a dormitory capable of hosting 60,000 students and facilities to serve over 30,000 students and 1,000 staff. 

Over 10,000 engineers and bachelors, as well as over 2,000 master's and doctorate degree recipients graduate annually from the university.
