Over half a million people take part in 2025 Language Self-Learning Month in Hanoi

Hanoi is taking an aggressive step to promote language learning with the launch of 2025 Foreign Language Self-Learning Month.

More than 615,000 teachers and students have signed up to take part in the 2025 Foreign Language Self-Learning Month, the Hanoi Department of Education and Training (DOET) announced at a conference on February 20.

The event, which was broadcast to 500 educational institutions across the city, marked the official launch of this year's initiative aimed at promoting self-directed foreign language learning.

Tran The Cuong, Director of Hanoi DOET, said that the Foreign Language Self-Learning Month not only encourages students to develop their language skills, but also promotes a creative and effective learning environment. It represents an innovative approach to foreign language teaching and learning.

The initiative has been widely rolled out with enthusiastic participation from students and teachers. Through a learning monitoring system, schools can assess student progress and share experiences and progress.

Speaking at the conference, Deputy Minister of Education and Training Pham Ngoc Thuong praised Hanoi's proactive approach to promoting self-learning. He also suggested that the model be replicated nationwide to build a sustainable learning society.

"This initiative is an opportunity for everyone to improve their language skills, expand their knowledge and step out of their comfort zone," said Do My Linh, winner of the Miss Vietnam beauty pageant and a graduate of Viet Duc High School.

She expressed her admiration for the perseverance of learners of all ages, from students to professionals to the elderly.

Earlier, on January 9, the Hanoi DOET launched the Foreign Language Self-Learning Month, attracting more than 615,000 participants to the FSEL online learning platform, including more than 515,000 who completed English proficiency assessments. Many schools have also introduced reward mechanisms to encourage students' active participation.

It is expected that 2025 Foreign Language Self-Learning Month will continue to spread a proactive learning spirit, help students and teachers improve their foreign language skills, and prepare for global integration and development.
