The award honors organizations, individuals and enterprises who have made outstanding contributions in the process of planning, developing and managing urban areas and rural residential areas in Vietnam.

Hanoi has won two national urban planning awards namely the pedestrian space around Hoan Kiem Lake with special prize, and the one-million-tree program by Hanoi Green Park Company with excellent award in the urban development management category.

The awards were announced at the first National Urban Planning Awards Ceremony held on April 25.

Chairman of the Vietnam Urban Development Association Tran Ngoc Chinh highlighted that this is a national award held every two years to recognize the role of planning consultancy, construction and urban development management.

Besides, the award also honors organizations, individuals and enterprises who have made outstanding contributions in the process of planning, developing and managing urban areas and rural residential areas in Vietnam, Chinh added.

In 2016, the Hoan Kiem district People's Committee started to embellish the urban landscape and architecture space; renovated technical infrastructure, roads, sidewalks and information infrastructure; created green space; and improved Hoan Kiem Lake’s water quality.

Chinh noted that Vietnam has many walking streets, but the walking street around Sword Lake has its own characteristics as it is open to people of all ages and all walks of life, adjacent to centuries-old relic sites.

“Cultural and entertainment activities at Hoan Kiem district’s pedestrian street and surrounding areas are a combination of Vietnamese identities and cultural activities from different parts of the world, creating diversity and characteristics that exist in Hanoi only,” Chinh stressed.

For a green, civilized and modern capital city

The program of planting one million trees was initiated by Chairman of the Hanoi People's Committee Nguyen Duc Chung in 2016, with the goal of adding one million new trees in the period of 2016-2020. In fact, the city has completed the goal two years ahead of the schedule. Currently, Hanoi city is planting more 600,000 trees from now to 2020.

Architect Tran Tuan Anh, an urban planning expert, said that this project was initiated with the purpose of to build a "green, civilized and modern" capital city in the context of fast urbanization that has affected people’s living environment.

This is a right and practical policy. The trees will contribute to air conditioning, minimize greenhouse gas effects, bring a healthier living environment to people and enhance the aesthetic of urban design in the capital, Anh added.
