Polluting bulb factory will be moved out of Hanoi’s downtown
The fire at Hanoi`s bulb factory has raised an alarm about the factories operating in the capital`s center and densely-populated areas.
The shareholders of the company owning the factory which caught fire in late August approved the budget and roadmap of relocating its factory to the neighboring Bac Ninh province, the company’s deputy general director said at a meeting on September 11.
The meeting was held at Rang Dong Light Source and Vacuum Flask Joint Stock Company (Rang Dong JSC)’s headquarter and saw the attendance of the Hanoi's Environment Protection Authority under the Hanoi Department of Natural Resources and Environment, Urban and Industrial Environment JSC 10 (URENCO 10).
Two Japanese experts invited by the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology to assist in determining the level of soil, water and air pollution of the blaze also attended the meeting.
Rang Dong JSC's Deputy General Director Tran Trung Tuong said, his company took part in working out the detoxification plan together with Vietnam’s Chemical Army under Ministry of Defense, URENCO 10 and the Hanoi's Environment Protection Authority.
Accordingly, this morning, URENCO 10 started removing fire debris with the assistance of the Chemical Army. The work scheduled for September 12-15 will be carried out overnight so as for the environment to be safe again as soon as possible.
The air monitoring results are up to permissible standards
Head of the Hanoi's Environment Protection Authority Mai Trong Thai said that the agency still monitors daily air environment, wastewater and surface water at the site once a week.
Over the last three days, results of air monitoring within a radius of 500 meters at three monitoring stations show the environmental indicators at the site are within the permitted standards and mercury concentration remains under the limit, Thai stressed.
He added that the authority will continue monitoring and assessing before, during and after the remediation, strictly control air monitoring and report to Hanoi’s authority and residents.
Days after Rang Dong JSC factory caught fire, residents in the area are still concerned about toxic materials and chemicals, such as phosphorus, zinc powder, and mercury in the air posing health hazards.
The fire at Rang Dong JSC has also raised an alarm about the factories operating in the center of Hanoi and densely-populated areas. The Hanoi’s People’s Committee said it already has plan for the relocation of 117 facilities causing environmental pollution in 12 urban districts. Nevertheless, by last year only four facilities had been relocated, leaving more than a hundred still in operation in the capital.
