Regarding the scheme titled “Strengthening the management of road transportation to reduce traffic congestion and environmental pollution in the city,” Vien said that traffic congestion in the city has been basically solved as congestion points dropped to 27 by July 2019 from 33 in 2018.
The public transportation service has been improved, the bus network has been expanded, meeting 15.7% of commuters’ needs now and projected to serve 17.3% of passengers at end-2019.
However, the authority also acknowledged that some tasks are being implemented at a slow pace, especially the execution of road projects due to complicated agreements among relevant ministries and departments as well as the locals and interest groups. The number of private vehicles increases rapidly is also another reason for the still complicated traffic congestion situation.
In order to solve these problems, the department proposed to implement harmonious solutions such as putting into operation urban railway lines soon and enhancing public transportation by raising the capacity of bus network; promoting information technology application to coordinate public transport means; communicating and mobilizing people to make more use of public means and conducting regular inspection.
