Vietnam’s mobile networks gain global recognition for speed

Vietnamese carriers gain recognition in global rankings, reflecting advancements in mobile technology and nationwide digital infrastructure development.

THE HANOI TIMES — Viettel and Vinaphone, two of Vietnam’s largest mobile network operators, are among the world’s fastest mobile networks, according to Ookla’s Speedtest Awards 2025.

In the “Fastest Mobile Network” category, Viettel ranks third with 82.56 points.

The military-owned telecom group outperforms Singtel (82.53) and ranks behind UAE-based e& (88.05) and Qatari Ooredoo (87.05).

In the “Fastest 5G” category, Vinaphone scores 78.11 points to finish second.

Mobile network service provider e& from the UAE continues to top the world in this category.

Ookla’s scoring method includes download speed, which accounts for 70% of the calculation, upload speed, and latency.

Viettel recorded over 923,000 test samples across all network types, while Vinaphone had nearly 180,000 for 5G.

At a press briefing on August 5, officials from the Ministry of Science and Technology cited rapid 5G rollout and the phase-out of 2G and 3G as key drivers of improved performance.

By mid-2025, 26% of Vietnam’s population had access to 5G, with plans to reach 90% by year-end through the deployment of over 68,000 5G base stations.

According to i-Speed, Vietnam’s average mobile speed in Q2/2025 reached 75.19 Mbps. Viettel led with 83.6 Mbps, marking a 26% increase year-on-year.

Minister of Science and Technology Nguyen Manh Hung called digital infrastructure a national priority, setting minimum speed targets of 100 Mbps for 5G and 200 Mbps for fiber broadband.
