Pham Hong Nhung, a resident in Dong Da Commune, Hanoi, said: “When experiencing the site with my 10-year-old son, I was amazed at how culture, history and technology were combined. Especially, the performance on the Quintessence of Education is significant to educate the young generation, like my son.”
She said seeing Van Mieu come alive at night is truly unique and proud, a good chance to educate children about the national tradition of education.
Visitors are immediately struck by the transformation of the Temple of Literature at night, where historic architecture is bathed in warm and ambient lighting.
Pathways are illuminated to guide evening strollers and the tranquil atmosphere invites reflection, making it not just a heritage site but a living part of Hanoi’s cultural life after dark.

A new perspective on a familiar heritage site
The Van Mieu Night Tour themed “Tinh Hoa Dao Hoc” (The Quintessence of Education) launched by the Van Mieu – Quoc Tu Giam Center for Cultural and Scientific Activities in November 2023 quickly attracted a large number of visitors.
It adds diversity to heritage experiences in Hanoi, offering a fresh view of the iconic site that daytime visitors rarely see.
The complex is illuminated with artistic lighting and 3D Mapping technology, turning each walkway, stele and ancient roof into a shimmering spectacle. Every section, such as Thien Quang well, the Stele Garden, Dai Thanh and Thai Hoc zones, features carefully designed light and sound, creating an atmosphere entirely distinct from daytime visits.

During the tour, visitors walk through the site while listening to commentary and enjoying themed light and sound projections. A highlight is the 3D Mapping show in the Thai Hoc area, portraying the nation’s reverence for learning and the principle of valuing talent.
The tour has also drawn young audiences eager to explore history and culture through modern artistic expression. Many view it not just as a visit, but as an educational journey enriched by immersive light and sound.

Pornrak, a visitor from Chiang Mai, Thailand, said: “I am a friend of Vietnam and Hanoi is the place I return to most. Though I’ve known that the Temple of Literature was Vietnam’s first university with a thousand-year history, I was amazed to experience it at night with the rhythm of light, sound and 3D Mapping.”
In addition, visitors can enjoy traditional music at the Khue Van Cac pavilion, adding warmth and vitality to the heritage space. Each moment evokes admiration for the solemn yet soulful beauty of Van Mieu at night.

Saowaluk Siri, who is Pornrak’s companion from Chiang Mai, could not hide her admiration for the thousand-year-old heritage. “The night tour feels magical. Each stele and roof seems alive. The space is both solemn and intimate, leaving a lasting impression.”
“Walking through the site at night with traditional music lets me feel Hanoi’s cultural rhythm in a way completely different from daytime visits,” she added.
Heritage comes alive in the digital age
Le Xuan Kieu, Director of the Van Mieu – Quoc Tu Giam Center for Cultural and Scientific Activities, said the night tour offers visitors a perspective they cannot experience during the day.
He emphasized that lighting, sound and 3D Mapping not only honor the education tradition – the core of Van Mieu, but also revitalize heritage in the digital era.

Cultural and tourism experts view night tours as a positive trend in modern tourism. Assoc. Prof. Bui Hoai Son, Member of the National Assembly’s Committee on Culture and Education, said that organizing night tours at Van Mieu is highly positive and aligns with Hanoi as a creative city.
Programs like this turn heritage sites into spaces for creativity, inspiration and community engagement, strengthening Hanoi’s image as a destination that is safe, friendly, attractive and high-quality.
The Van Mieu Night Tour opening hours are from 6:30 PM to 10:30 PM. The 3D Mapping presentation is 20 – 30 minutes. Visitors are encouraged to enter 60 minutes before the 3D Mapping show.

The Van Mieu Night Tour is the 4th night tour in Hanoi, launched after those at Hoa Lo Prison Relic, UNESCO-inscribed Thang Long Imperial Citadel and Vietnam Museum of Literature.
