Vietnam sees plunge in cyber-attacks in H1

Cyber security and safety in Vietnam have been improved recently thanks to campaigns on malware removal and training courses on cyber-attack combat launched in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City.

Vietnam recorded 3,159 cyber-attacks in the first six months of 2019, a decrease of 45.90% from the same period last year, the Ministry of Information and Communications (MIC) said on July 5.

They included 968 interface changes (Deface), 635 malicious code installations (Malware), and 1,556 phishing activities.

Statistics show that the number of attacks diminished and mainly in the form of phishing. Particularly, January saw the strongest drop in cyber-attacks of 76.86%. In May, the number of attacks decreased by at least 47.37% compared to the same period in 2018.

This index shows that cyber security and safety in Vietnam has been improved thanks to campaigns on malware removal and training courses on cyber-attack combat launched in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City.

The number of IP addresses in Vietnam infected with malicious viruses (botnet) was 4,300,218, down 34.30% year-on-year.

According to the report on the Global Network Safety and Security Index by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) on March 27, 2018, Vietnam was ranked 50th out of 175 places worldwide in the global cyber security index, up from the 100th position in 2017.

Vietnam ranked fifth out of 11 countries in Southeast Asia in terms of average score, after Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand and Indonesia. In 2018, Vietnam had a score of 0.693 (0.245 in 2017).
