Vietnamese chess team wins big at Southeast Asian championship

The Vietnamese masters are expected to repeat their high performance in both blitz and rapid chess.

THE HANOI TIMES — Vietnamese players pocketed gold medals in almost all the standard chess categories at the ASEAN+ Age Groups Chess Championships 2025, which closed on July 11 in Penang, Malaysia.

The Vietnamese masters dominated 15 out of 16 team event pools and 13 out of 16 individual event categories.

The champions were Vo Quang Minh (Open U6), Nguyen Xuan Thao Han (Girls U6), Nguyen Ha Thi Hai (Open U16), Dang Le Xuan Hien (Girls U16), Dang Anh Minh (Open U18), Nguyen Binh Vy (Girls U18), and Tu Hoang Thong (U50).

The chess players competed in blitz and rapid chess on July 9 and 10.

More than 300 competitors from 18 countries and regions registered for the event. Among them were chess powerhouses such as China, India, Macau, Malaysia, and Vietnam.
