Vietnamese documentary named among finalists for Sweden Film Awards

The Vietnamese documentary explores themes of maternal love.

THE HANOI TIMES — "Me toi" (My Mother), a Vietnamese documentary, was selected as a finalist in the First Documentary Film category of the Sweden Film Awards.

The 37-minute film was directed and filmed by Tran Viet Van, a journalist from Lao Dong (Labor) Newspaper, with Dang Thu Ha as the screenwriter and producer. It captures the twilight years of 91-year-old Associate Professor Dr. Le Thi Duc Hanh, a mother and literature scholar.

The film delves into the themes of maternal love and the precariousness of life at a time often referred to as "a flickering candle in the wind."

The Sweden Film Awards accept entries from around the world and offer awards in various categories, including documentaries, comedies, experimental films, and horror films. "My Mother" was selected as a finalist in the First Documentary Film category.

Previously, Me toi won the Best Short Documentary and Best First-Time Director awards at the Cine Paris Film Festival. The film was also selected for screening at the Golden Short Film Festival in Italy and the First-Time Filmmaker Sessions, Volume 5, which is part of the Lift-Off Film Festival in the UK. It was streamed on Vimeo from May 19 to June 1.
