Vietnam’s airport transportation service in the competition of traditional taxi, Uber and Grab

Cheap and fast is said to be the competitive strength of Uber and Grab. Currently, these two services have come to airport, the existing market of traditional taxis.

The "competition" at the airport has long been silenced, but is said to actually "spark" when Uber offered a "common price" of 150,000 VND (US$7) / trip from the inner city, regardless of departure location.
In Ho Chi Minh City, the Grab discount amount for each airport trip is VND50,000 (US$2). "Accordingly, customers must pay VND 130,000 for traditional taxis from District 1 to Tan Son Nhat airport while only pays 20,000 VND for Grab (included VND 50,000 discount)" said Mr. Tin, from Ho Chi Minh city.
Uber and Grab appears densely around airport
According to a survey conducted by Zing.vn, the number of Uber and Grab cars has not only appeared in the inner city but has expanded to Noi Bai International Airport. When opening application at the airport area, we can see a lot of cars from Uber and Grab parked in this area.
For Grab, most cars at the airport are GrabCar while there is only a few of GrabTaxi. For Uber, the parking cars at the airport include both UberX and UberBlack.
Cheap but not easy to catch the car!
Reporters also tried to catch this car but all drivers refused travelling to Noi Bai airport.
According to an Uber driver, he refused as if calculating, the actual revenue collected after a trip is only about 50,000 VND after deducting 25% of tax, fuel costs and parking fee.
In many cases, driver even asks the customer to cancel the trip and the guest must agree to pay a penalty fee of 10%, equivalent to 15,000, from the Uber.
Uber driver does not want to transport to the airport at VND 150,000. This Uber's new fixed price is not approved by its drivers, many drivers even suggests customers another agreed amount.
Another driver said that according to Uber recent announcement, if the driver cancels more than three trips, their account will be locked within 15 days. If the recidivism continues, the account will be locked permanently.
With the new Uber applied rates, the transportation price from Hanoi to Noi Bai is only 150,000 VND, regardless of the customer's departure location. Screenshots.
Traditional taxi complains on their reduced income
At present, some taxi companies occupy most of the market share in Noi Bai airport, including Noi Bai, Group, Dai Nam ... and some companies welcome guests in the lobby like Mai Linh or ABC...
According to the current price list of taxi companies specializing in Hanoi - Noi Bai route and vice versa, the cost of moving for Taxi Noi Bai is VND 200,000 and TaxiGroup is VND 250,000 while Dai Nam Taxi range from VND 180,000 to 260,000 depending on the departure location. All of these rates are more expensive than Uber and Grab price.
According to a lot of traditional taxi drivers at airport, recently, their income is quite uncertain, some days even below the target.
Mr. Quang Truong (Bac Ninh), an airport taxi driver said the appearance of Uber and Grab influenced his income. Previously, he can run more than 10 trips per day on Hanoi - Noi Bai route, but now he can only serve more than half of that.
According to Mr. Quang Truong, "If I move to work for Uber and Grab, my income is still not better. The more cars, the lower the income."
Grab
Grab (formerly GrabTaxi) is a technology company providing transportation and travel services in Malaysia, Singapore and Southeast Asian countries, including Vietnam. Grab operates under the same mechanism as Uber. Although initially operating like Uber cars in Malaysia and Singapore, in order to accommodate the traffic jams in many cities, Grab has developed GrabBike service with motor vehicles in Vietnam, Thailand and Indonesia.
