Vietnam's oldest, youngest professors in 40 years

Two of Vietnam’s newly recognised professors are the youngest and oldest persons receiving this title in the country since 1974, at 37 and 81 years of age.

Phan Thanh Son Nam , 37, is a lecturer at the Vietnam National University in Ho Chi Minh City while Le Ngoc Canh, 81, is a former lecturer at the National University of Art Education.

They were among 59 individuals bestowed with the title of professor in 2014. Title certificates were granted at Van Mieu (the Temple of Literature) - Quoc Tu Giam (the first university of Vietnam) in Hanoi on February 4.

Notably, two of the new professors are Deputy Minister of Health Nguyen Viet Tien and Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Bui Cach Tuyen.

An additional 585 others received the title of associate professor at the ceremony.

Minister of Education and Training Pham Vu Luan, who is also the Chairman of the State Council for Professor Title, said there has been an increasing number of young professors and associate professors in recent years. Many of them conducted research studies valuable to the nation’s socio-economic development and defence-security as recognised by international experts.

Professors and associate professors form the core force for training intellectuals in Vietnam, helping nurture younger generations’ love for innovation and science, he added.
