WHO hails Vietnam for immunization coverage
Vietnam’s immunization coverage now surpasses the global average.
THE HANOI TIMES — Vietnam's coverage of the first dose of the diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis (DTP1) vaccine reached 99% in 2024, up from 80% in 2023, according to the latest estimates of national immunization coverage (EUNIC) released by the World Health Organization (WHO) and UNICEF on July 16.
The WHO and UNICEF praised the Vietnamese government's leadership and the commitment of health workers and communities in achieving this progress.
The percentage of children inoculated with all three DTP doses surged from 65% to 97%.

The WHO and UNICEF also reported that first-dose measles vaccine coverage jumped from 82% in 2023 to 98% in 2024.
Notably, the number of “zero-dose” children, or children who were not vaccinated at all, plummeted from 274,000 in 2023 to just 13,000 in 2024, a drop of over 95%.
However, challenges remain, as 40,000 children missing the third DTP dose, and 27,000 unvaccinated against measles.
The international organizations recommended accelerating catch-up vaccination campaigns, especially in hard-to-reach areas, to ensure that no child is left behind.
