A resilient and proud Vietnam: Indian diplomat

It is inspiring to see Vietnam’s 80th National Day, marking its steady growth into a dynamic economy and an active, independent and constructive player in global affairs.

THE HANOI TIMES — On the occasion of the 80th anniversary of Vietnam’s National Day, The Hanoi Times is honored to introduce reflections by Mr. Roshan Lepcha, Counsellor (Pol & Info), Embassy of India, Hanoi.

During my three years in Vietnam, I have witnessed Vietnam as a country of resilience, dynamism and warmth. Hanoi itself is a city where history and modernity coexist harmoniously: ancient temples and tree-lined boulevards stand alongside rising skyscrapers and expanding infrastructure.

What has truly impressed me the most is not just the rapid socio-economic development, but the spirit of the Vietnamese people – hardworking, optimistic, community-oriented, and full of love for the nation.

It is a pleasure to witness the 80th anniversary festivities in Vietnam. Vietnam’s progress in recent years has been remarkable. With steady economic growth, the country has become one of the most promising economies in the region and the world.

Vietnam’s active role in ASEAN, constructive participation in multilateral forums, and contributions to peacekeeping reflect its foreign policy of independence, self-reliance, peace, cooperation and development; diversification and multilateralization of relations; proactive and active international integration.

As an Indian diplomat, I am also heartened to witness cultural closeness between our two countries through shared traditions of Buddhism, family values and respect for elders. Celebrations like Tet remind me of the festivity we experience back in India while yoga and meditation are popular with Vietnamese friends.

Cultural exchanges, such as the Indian Film Festival and International Day of Yoga that we celebrate annually, has been enhancing and strengthening people-level ties. These commonalities are not just historical ties but living bridges that strengthen our partnership.

An equally important factor is the strong foundation of the India–Vietnam Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, which has been built on deep and long-standing mutual trust and understanding. India has been proud to contribute to Vietnam’s progress through development partnership across provinces, scholarships, and capacity-building programs.

Both countries are also guided by millennial aspirations: India’s Vision @2047 and Vietnam’s Vision 2045 to become developed nations. These parallel journeys create a natural synergy, offering vast opportunities for cooperation in technology, education, sustainable growth, and people-to-people ties.

Looking back, I feel privileged to have experienced Vietnam at a pivotal moment in its growth. It is the hospitality of its people and the vibrancy of its culture that leave the deepest impression in my mind and heart. I wish Vietnam greater successes and hope for new heights in Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between India and Vietnam.
