Berlin names Dong Xuan tram stop honoring Vietnamese community landmark
Germany's capital of Berlin has formally recognized one of its most distinctive ethnic and commercial landmarks by renaming a tram stop after the Dong Xuan Trade Center, reflecting the long-standing integration and contributions of the Vietnamese community to the city’s economic and social life.
THE HANOI TIMES — The authorities of Berlin and Lichtenberg District on January 8 decided to rename the tram stop in front of the Dong Xuan Trade Center Berlin as “Dong Xuan”.
The new name will be updated across route signage, stop information and journey-planning platforms throughout Berlin’s tram network.

The decision has drawn a positive response from the trade center’s management, local traders and the Vietnamese community in the city.
It followed a lengthy advocacy process involving the Vietnamese Embassy in Germany, Vietnamese community organizations in Berlin and Lichtenberg District authorities.
Under Berlin’s public transport regulations, tram stops cannot carry commercial names. Renaming a stop also involves significant costs, as mapping systems, location data and route information require updates.
Against this backdrop, the decision to rename the stop near the Dong Xuan Trade Center stands out as an exception, signaling local authorities’ recognition of the market’s broader community value.
The “Dong Xuan” stop takes its name from the Dong Xuan Trade Center, a major Vietnamese commercial complex in Berlin founded by entrepreneur Nguyen Van Hien.
Over the years, the center has become a well-known destination for Vietnamese residents as well as local Germans and visitors seeking Asian shopping, cuisine and services in eastern Berlin.
In Vietnamese, “Dong Xuan” means “spring meadow”. In practice, the Dong Xuan Trade Center operates as a large indoor market, featuring rows of stalls, fresh and decorative flowers and a wide range of services.
The center also serves as a regular gathering place for the Vietnamese community, where people meet to eat, shop and maintain social connections.
Dong Xuan Trade Center brings together traders from Vietnam, India, China and Pakistan.
It comprises six large halls with shops, retail stalls and restaurants offering Asian food and goods, alongside services such as hairdressing, massage and nail care.
Many Vietnamese-run businesses also operate at the center, including tax consultancies, law offices, travel agencies, driving schools and advertising firms.
The origins of the Dong Xuan Trade Center date back to the period after Germany’s reunification, when many former Vietnamese contract workers turned to entrepreneurship to secure stable livelihoods, including Nguyen Van Hien.
Faced with long trips to Poland to source wholesale goods, he developed the idea of establishing a wholesale market directly in Berlin.
The Dong Xuan Trade Center drew inspiration from Dong Xuan Market in Hanoi, a long-established marketplace known for its wide range of goods.
From a venue initially serving the Vietnamese community, it has gradually evolved into a trading hub for merchants from across Germany and neighboring countries.
The tram stop bearing the name “Dong Xuan” therefore represents more than a change in transport signage.
It reflects the growth of the Dong Xuan Trade Center and the enduring integration and contributions of the Vietnamese community to Berlin’s economic and social life.
