THE HANOI TIMES — General Secretary and President of China Xi Jinping is scheduled to arrive in Hanoi today [April 14] for a state visit to Vietnam.

Party General Secretary and President of China Xi Jinping.

The visit, taking place from April 14 to 15, is being made at the invitation of General Secretary To Lam and President Luong Cuong.

This marks Xi Jinping’s fourth state visit to Vietnam in his role as General Secretary and President of China, and comes less than a year after General Secretary To Lam’s visit to China. During the trip, the two sides are expected to discuss major orientations and concrete measures to strengthen bilateral cooperation across various sectors. Xi Jinping will also participate in several other key diplomatic activities.

On April 12, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Bui Thanh Son described the visit as a major political and diplomatic event for both Parties and both countries. He highlighted its strategic importance and long-term impact on Vietnam–China relations, especially as the two countries enter a new era of development.

Son expressed confidence that the visit would be a success and mark a new milestone in the bilateral relationship.

Vietnamese Ambassador to China Pham Thanh Binh noted that Vietnam would extend a warm and high-level reception to Xi Jinping during the visit.

China was the first country to establish diplomatic relations with Vietnam on January 18, 1950. The two countries established a Comprehensive Strategic Cooperative Partnership in 2008.

During Xi Jinping’s previous state visit to Vietnam in December 2023, the two sides identified six major areas of cooperation to deepen and elevate the Comprehensive Strategic Cooperative Partnership and to advance the building of a shared future community of strategic significance.

In 2024, Vietnam remains China’s largest trading partner in ASEAN and its fourth-largest trading partner globally. Bilateral trade reached US$205.2 billion in 2024, up 19.3%. In the first quarter of 2025, bilateral trade reached US$51.25 billion.
