Fireworks signal a forward-looking New Year in Hanoi

Vietnam’s capital was illuminated by coordinated bursts of fireworks over Hoan Kiem Lake, West Lake and three other sites on New Year’s Eve, drawing thousands of residents and visitors into the streets.

THE HANOI TIMES — Fireworks lit up Hanoi before midnight on New Year’s Eve, signaling a forward-looking start to 2026. The displays began at 11:45 PM, 15 minutes earlier than tradition, a deliberate choice by city officials to reflect a spirit of initiative and anticipation for the year ahead.

From West Lake’s historic shoreline, golden and crimson reflections rippled across the water, briefly illuminating nearby buildings. Across the city, rooftops, bridges and public squares filled with families pausing to mark the moment, phones raised to capture the spectacle.
