Fostering Vietnam - Cambodia traditional relationship

Chairwoman of the Vietnamese National Assembly (NA) Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan yesterday had talks with Chairman of the Cambodian National Assembly Heng Samrin in Phnom Penh, which formed part of the Vietnamese leader’s official visit to Cambodia.
At the meeting, Chairman of the Cambodian National Assembly Heng Samrin stressed that the visit by his Vietnamese counterpart had important significance as it proved strengthened solidarity and friendship between the two countries, two parliaments and the two people.
He congratulated Ngan for being elected as the head of Vietnam’s NA. He noted that during the last four NA terms, the friendly relations and co-operation between the two sides have been continuously consolidated and developed, expressing his trust that the relationship will be further developed.
The Cambodian NA Chairman suggested the two sides continue co-operating and sharing experience. He thanked the Vietnamese NA for actively supporting and assisting in the training of human resources, providing equipment and many other types of help in order to improve the efficiency of the Cambodian NA’s operations.
The two leaders expressed their satisfaction over the economic co-operation, trade and investment between the two countries at all levels. So far, Vietnamese enterprises have invested in 182 projects in Cambodia with a total registered capital of US$2.85 billion.
They agreed to continue promoting the role of supervising the implementation of agreements reached between the two governments and continue to share, support and consult with each other on international issues of mutual interest as well as to enhance close co-operation in inter-parliamentary forums and regional parliaments that both countries are members of.
NA Chairwoman Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan has affirmed Vietnam’s consistency in attaching importance and top priority for the consolidation and strengthening of good neighbourliness, traditional friendship and comprehensive co-operation with Cambodia.
She thanked the NA and the Government of Cambodia for facilitating the Vietnamese community in Cambodia. She stressed that this was her first official trip as the head of Vietnam’s National Assembly with a desire to share the spirit of solidarity, friendship and co-operation between Vietnam and Cambodia.
** The same day, NA Chairwoman Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan also had a meeting with Cambodian Prime Minister Samdech Hun Sen in Phnom Penh. She reiterated Vietnam’s consistent policy of giving priority to strengthening traditional friendship and multi-dimensional cooperation with Cambodia.
Ngan said Vietnam sincerely wishes to work together with Cambodia to continue developing their relations in a sustainable manner to bring visible benefits to their people. She said agreements reached by the countries’ leaders have been carried out quickly across fields, bringing positive results, especially in trade and investment.
She stated that the Vietnamese NA will do its best with the Cambodian Upper House and legislature to continue sharing information and experience in law-making, and supervision, and deciding on key country issues, as well as increase joint work to monitor the implementation of signed agreements.
Hun Sen, for his part, suggested the two countries should further educate the public about the tradition of friendship and comprehensive cooperation between the two countries, especially among youngsters.
He expressed thanks to Vietnam for providing health check-ups and treatment to residents living in border areas. The host took the occasion to urge Vietnamese, Lao and Cambodian border localities to increase exchanges to contribute to their socio-economic development.
