The general election in Hanoi for deputies of the 15th National Assembly and all-level People’s Councils for the 2021-2026 term has ended in success with high voter turnout amid the serious Covid-19 situation.

Chairman of the Hanoi People’s Council Nguyen Ngoc Tuan made the conclusion in a meeting of the city’s election committee on May 27, in which 100% of its members have endorsed the result of the election.

In Hanoi, the local voters have elected 95 representatives for the city-level People’s Council, whose list would be submitted by the local election committee to the national election committee and published on the media.

“Thorough preparation process with the active participation of the entire political system has truly turned the election into a festive occasion for the people,” Tuan noted.

Vice Secretary of the Hanoi Party Committee Nguyen Thi Tuyen also attributed the high political awareness of the people to the success of the election.

“The locals have demonstrated their responsibilities in building an effective and strong government apparatus,” Tuyen stated.

At the meeting, Vice Director of the municipal Department of Internal Affairs Nguyen Chi Doan said all 4,825 polling stations have completed their task on the election day [May 23].

Given a total number of voters of over 5.44 million, the city’s voter turnout stood at 99.16%, Doan noted, adding the highest belongs to Ba Dinh district (99.98%) while the lowest was recorded in Ung Hoa district (96.7%).

“Local authorities had mobilized nearly 15,000 police to ensure public order and strictly applied anti-Covid-19 measures in every polling station to keep the community safe,” noted Doan.

At the 56th meeting convened by the Standing committee of the National Assembly (NA) on the same day, NA Chairman Vuong Dinh Hue announced the newly elected 500 deputies for the 15th NA.

Overall, the country’s turnout was estimated at 99.57%, higher than the figure recorded in the previous election held five years ago.

“During the Covid-19 pandemic, meetings between voters and candidates were held online, which create conditions for more voters to participate,” Hue noted.

The national election committee is set to release the list of elected deputies for the 15th National Assembly on June 12 at the latest, or 20 days after the election day.
