Hanoi aids victims of Ha Long boat accident

Local authorities in Hanoi are offering immediate assistance to families affected by the boat accident.

THE HANOI TIMES — Hanoi plans to provide financial aid of VND520 million (US$19,000) to each victim of the tragic boat accident in Ha Long Bay, the northern province of Quang Ninh.

Some VND30 million (US$1,180) will be given for each life lost, and VND8 million (US$320) for each person injured.

So far, 17 Hanoians were confirmed dead and one person was injured in the July 19 accident.

The tourist boat, which was carrying 49 passengers and three crew members, flipped over when a sudden thunderstorm hit the area.

As of July 21, ten victims had been rescued alive, thirty-six were confirmed dead, and three remained missing.

On July 20, Chairman of the Hanoi People’s Committee Tran Sy Thanh issued an urgent directive requesting support for affected families.

The Hanoi Department of Health is coordinating medical support, and the Hanoi Department of Home Affairs is ensuring proper funeral services for the victims.
