Hanoi, Beijing strengthen cooperation in labor union development

Cooperation between the two sides would foster mutual learning and labor movements and trade union activities in both countries.

Hanoi seeks to strengthen ties with the Beijing Federation of Trade Unions (BFTU) through collaboration and mutual learning to advance labor movements and trade union activities in both countries.

Head of the Hanoi Party Committee’s Mass Mobilization Commission Do Anh Tuan expressed this view at a meeting with the Head of the Budget Inspection Committee of the BFTU Sun Lidong on November 25.

According to Tuan, Hanoi and Beijing established official ties in 1994 to promote the long-standing cooperation and friendship between Vietnam and China, and have strengthened them over the past 30 years.

The two capitals, Hanoi and Beijing, have carried out numerous effective cooperation activities, contributing to their socio-economic development and bilateral ties. “This relationship serves as a decentralization model of the two nations, enhancing the comprehensive strategic partnership between Vietnam and China,” said Tuan.

Currently, China is a major foreign investor in Vietnam and significantly contributes to Hanoi's export turnover.

During the meeting, Tuan briefed the Chinese guest on Hanoi's socio-economic achievements in 2024. In the first ten months, the capital's goods export turnover reached $15.5 billion, up 12.3% year-on-year. Foreign direct investment increased by $1.6 billion, with 233 new projects worth over $1.1 billion. The city’s budget revenue amounted to VND425.2 trillion (US$16.7 billion), achieving 104% of the annual target, and tourist arrivals grew by 28.5% to 5.1 million. Notably, the labor market has expanded to employ more than 2.7 million workers. The partnership between the Hanoi Confederation of Labor and its Beijing counterpart, established in 1995, includes annual delegations and mutual exchanges to enhance union activities.

Tuan said that the Hanoi Party Committee hopes for stronger ties between the Beijing General Federation of Labor and the Hanoi Confederation of Labor, fostering collaboration, mutual learning, and the growth of labor movements and trade union activities in both countries.

Sun, for his part, emphasized the close collaboration between the two unions in improving workers' welfare and enhancing bilateral economic and trade relations. During the visit, the BFTU and the Hanoi Labor Confederation will exchange views on the use of funds, trade union dues, the protection of the interests of union members and workers, and how to better serve them, Sun said. Noting the similarities in the development strategies of the two capitals, he expressed confidence that the trade union partnership would achieve significant results under both parties' leadership. Sun also looked forward to broader and deeper people-to-people exchanges that would open a new chapter in trade union cooperation between Hanoi and Beijing, particularly in safeguarding workers' rights.
