Hanoi downtown district persists in classifying waste at source

Hanoi city is mulling the application of 4.0 technology in garbage collection and treatment.

After two failed attempts, the People's Committee of Hoan Kiem district and Hanoi Urban Environment Company (Urenco), the main garbage collector in Hanoi, have shown determination to enforce the classification of trash at source before collecting, Kinhtedothi.vn reported.

In recent years, the amount of garbage in Hanoi city in general and Hoan Kiem district in particular has increased by nearly 10% per year. Garbage, if unsorted, would cause a waste of resources including land fund for dumping ground and budget for pollution treatment.

Therefore, classifying garbage at source will help reduce the amount of garbage which needs being processed.

Counseled by Urenco, Hoan Kiem district's authorities have launched the program to manage waste classification and prevent plastic waste in the district.

In particular, in the first phase (2020), the district will classify garbage into two categories (recyclable and non-recyclable). In the second phase (from 2021 onwards), the district will classify garbage depending on the city's waste processing technology.

To accomplish the above-mentioned goal, the People's Committee of Hoan Kiem district has been building a waste management model for effective reuse of garbage, educating community, enterprises and organizations, especially pupils in the district on the necessity of classifying garbage.

Besides, the district will encourage garbage collectors to participate in environmental protection, create conditions for organizations and individuals to exercise their rights and obligations in keeping the environment green.

Dang Huu Binh, director of Urenco Hoan Kiem, said that his agency has promoted the propagation on how and when to sort waste at source in residential quarters and people in the district.

Moreover, the district has made a list of temporary dumping points and licensed trash pickers, Binh added.

In addition, the city is mulling the application of Industry 4.0 technologies in garbage collection and treatment, especially in helping people contact garbage collectors and arrange time for collecting recyclable waste at home twice a week (Saturday and Sunday) to improve the efficiency of sorting waste at source.
