The launch ceremony was attended by nearly 2,000 young people from 60 volunteer teams, representing more than 16,000 young volunteers from 339 teams from universities, colleges and institutes in the city, who will be sent to 31 cities and provinces across Vietnam.

The first batch of young volunteers will fan out across the seven northern provinces of Thai Binh, Hoa Binh, Ha Nam, Tuyen Quang, Lang Son, Thai Nguyen, and Bac Kan.

They will be involved in social welfare work, including summer courses for children, teaching essential life skills and English to kids, and integrated skills classes. They will also build 12 charity houses, repair 26 school toilets and upgrade at least 100km of roads and lanes.

The campaign is expected to benefit communities with a total value of more than VND33.6 billion (US$1.3 million). At the launch ceremony, the Youth Union and Vietnamese Students Association of Hanoi presented the volunteers with support worth nearly VND6 billion (US$236,000).

In his opening speech, Nguyen Tien Hung, Deputy Secretary of the Hanoi Communist Youth Union and head of the Hanoi Students' Association, recalled the "Three Readiness" movement launched 60 years ago, which ignited the revolutionary spirit of Hanoi's youth and students.

The "Three Readiness" movement  (Youth are Ready for Three Tasks) stands for "ready to fight", "ready to join the armed forces" and "ready to go anywhere and do whatever the Motherland needs."

The Green Summer 2024 Campaign is launched by leaders of the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union and the Hanoi Student Union.

The "Three Readiness" movement was the forerunner of later volunteer campaigns by Hanoi's youth, including today's Green Summer student volunteer campaign.

He called on all participants in the 2024 Campaign to uphold the traditions, promote creativity,  successfully complete the task and actively create meaningful stories about the campaign.

"Over the past 20 years, the campaign has attracted more than one million volunteers, who together have contributed an estimated VND300 billion ($11.8 million) in 33 provinces and cities across the country," Hung said.

As part of this year's Green Summer Campaign, the Hanoi Youth Union and the capital's Student Association have launched a website, tinhnguyenthudo.vr360.com.vn, to coordinate volunteer activities in the city.
