Hanoi offers discounts on multi-modal public transportation tickets
Scheduled to begin in September 2025, the multimodal travel pass aims to encourage public transportation use and reduce traffic congestion.
THE HANOI TIMES — Hanoi is set to launch a multimodal integrated ticketing system for buses and urban railways. Compared to single-mode tickets, the new system will offer passengers discounts of up to 40%.
Passengers will be able to use a single multi-modal card for both buses and metro lines, making travel across the city more convenient. Discounts will vary based on usage. A 40% reduction applies to those who combine bus rides with two metro lines (Cat Linh–Ha Dong and Nhon–Hanoi Station), and a 10% discount is offered for those who use a bus and one metro line.
Currently, a monthly pass for buses and two metro lines costs VND840,000 (US$32.14) if purchased separately. With the integrated ticket, the price drops to VND500,000 ($19.13). Daily and weekly passes are also available for VND50,000 ($1.91) per day and VND200,000 ($7.65) per week, respectively.

The city will also introduce distance-based pricing for single bus rides. Depending on travel distance, fares will range from VND4,350 ($0.17) to VND32,000 ($1.22). Long-term bus passes (two to 12 months) will offer additional discounts ranging from 3.5% to 6%.
The launch of the multimodal travel pass is part of Hanoi’s effort to promote sustainable transportation and reduce environmental pollution. Plans include the ability to use the multi-modal pass for bikeshare and taxis.
The automated fare collection (AFC) system will support the rollout, ensuring seamless transfers for commuters. By making public transportation more affordable and convenient, the Hanoi authorities hope to encourage residents to choose greener alternatives over private vehicles.
