Hanoi plans to restore historic Hang Long Street

The goal of restoring the name is to establish a link between the city's historical heritage and its ongoing urban development while respecting traditional values.

THE HANOI TIMES — The Hanoi authorities have submitted a proposal to restore the name "Hang Long" to a 174-meter road that connects Tran Binh Trong and Yet Kieu streets.

This proposal is part of a citywide plan to name or rename 38 streets, adjust the length of six streets, and name 14 public structures in 18 districts.

The road, which currently features sidewalks, greenery, and urban lighting, houses several institutions, including the headquarters of the Lao Dong Thu Do (Capital's Labor) Newspaper and the guesthouse of the Vietnam General Confederation of Labor.

Historically, Hang Long was a bustling street during the Later Le and early Nguyen dynasties (1428–1945). Its name originated from the trade of palanquins, parasols, and ceremonial umbrellas for temples and mandarins that was practiced there.

The street once hosted a shrine dedicated to Le Cong Hanh, the founder of the umbrella embroidery trade. Over time, the street was renamed Nam Bo and later incorporated into Le Duan Street.

Restoring the name reflects the city’s effort to honor Hanoi’s ancient "Hang" streets, which traditionally bore names tied to their trades. Officials emphasize the importance of educating younger generations about the city’s cultural legacy.

Hanoi also plans to name new streets Doan Khue, Nguyen Huu Lieu, and Hoc Phi, which will span diplomatic quarters, urban areas, and key transport routes, such as the Hanoi-Haiphong Expressway.

These proposals will be reviewed by the municipal People's Council during its July 8–11 session, reflecting Hanoi’s commitment to blending modernity with historical preservation and ensuring that the stories of its iconic streets endure.
