Hanoi promotes Red River Delta jackfruit

The capital seeks cooperation to promote One Commune, One Product (OCOP) items in the Red River Delta, which is expected to become the country's biggest economic hub.

The Hanoi Department of Agriculture and Rural Development opened an event on July 5 to promote OCOP products in the Red River Delta provinces and the city's specialty, jackfruit, and to seek cooperation opportunities.

The event will run until July 8 with over 100 booths of craft village products, safe agricultural products, and OCOP products from different regions.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Nguyen Xuan Dai, Director of the Hanoi Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (DARD), said that Hanoi currently has 1,135 hectares of jackfruit under cultivation, with a total production of 14,075 tons/ha/year.

"The event aims to promote safe agricultural products, handicrafts  and OCOP products in the provinces and cities of the Red River Delta and the whole country," Dai said.

He added that Hanoi produces a large number of jackfruit-based products, including dried jackfruit, sticky rice with jackfruit, and vegetarian meals, all of which are certified and have earned OCOP certification.

"In particular, handicrafts made of jackfruit wood have high economic value, such as traditional old houses, statues and decorations," Dai emphasized.

"This year's jackfruit event aims to showcase Hanoi's jackfruit economy. After that, the city government will select high-productivity jackfruit varieties to focus on development, helping to improve economic efficiency for jackfruit-growing households," Nguyen Manh Phuong, Deputy Director of DARD, told The Hanoi Times.

Participating in the jackfruit competition for the first time, the Binh Yen team from Hanoi's Thach That district displayed jackfruit wine, jackfruit jelly, wooden handicrafts made from jackfruit tree trunks (kettle, toothpick jar, betel tray, flower vase).

"The products must be made of wood from jackfruit trees that are at least 40 years old. Jackfruit wood is more durable than other types of wood because it doesn't warp and is resistant to termites. The older the tree, the more beautiful the wood color," Nguyen Trong Bang, team leader of Binh Yen, told The Hanoi Times.

He expressed his hope that he could make more high-value products from jackfruit with eye-catching designs and multifunctionality.

Trinh Thi Huong of the 45th Artillery Brigade, based in Son Tay Town, said her team brought fresh jackfruit dishes such as jelly, sticky rice, pudding, and yogurt to the contest. "We are very happy to have won the second prize," Huong said.
