Hanoi, UNDP collab to boost sustainable growth, green transition, circular economy

The deal sets out six areas of collaboration, reflecting the capital’s ambition to become a more livable and sustainable city.

THE HANOI TIMES — Hanoi authorities and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) on September 5 inked a memorandum of understanding (MoU), fostering joint efforts in green and sustainable development.

The UNDP will assist Hanoi in accelerating green transition, harness climate change response, better protect the environment and improve waste management.

The two sides will also boost the development of circular, digital and sharing economies, strengthen leadership capacity and modern governance and speed up public sector innovation.

“These directions align with Hanoi’s sustainable development goals. We are working to remove traffic and environmental challenges and become a more livable city,” said Chairman of the Hanoi People’s Committee Tran Sy Thanh.

He said that Hanoi has made progress toward becoming greener and more sustainable with the support of international partners, particularly UNDP.

"Hanoi places people at the heart of growth strategy," the city government leader added.

Building on this principle, Thanh hoped that the new agreement will pave the way for Hanoi to accelerate initiatives and projects in public governance, clean energy, sustainable transport and disaster risk management.

"These initiatives will help drive a green economy and improve residents’ quality of life," he said. "Hanoi authorities will collaborate with UNDP to bring the MoU into life."

Kanni Wignaraja, UN Assistant Secretary-General and Regional Director for Asia and the Pacific at the UNDP, praised Hanoi’s recent achievements.

She said that UNDP is committed to supporting Hanoi in its urban development. The organization official also expected that the agreement will soon be translated into concrete actions to advance sustainability and well-being in the capital.

On this occasion, Kanni Wignaraja exprerssed her strong impression of the city’s celebrations marking the 80th anniversary of the August Revolution and National Day on September 2.
