HCMC hosts Vietnam-France forum 2018 on smart, sustainable urban areas

The Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC) People’s Committee and French General Consulate signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on cooperation in air quality control in the framework of Vietnam-France forum 2018.

The Vietnam-France forum 2108 was co-organized by Business France and the French General Consulate in the city on July 4, focusing on smart and sustainable urban areas.
The event attracted experts, senior executives, and leading firms in architecture, urban transportation, energy, waste management, and water treatment. Participants discussed air quality management, green projects, and smart construction technology.

Smart urban development has always been a challenge for Vietnam. Currently, Vietnam is experiencing impressive economic growth, averaging over 6%, with a strong urbanization rate of 3.2% per year, and 37.5% of urban population in 2017.
Vietnam is one of the five countries most affected by climate change, with the Mekong Delta region among the three most affected.
In the framework of the forum, there was a seminar on air quality management and green building, intelligent building technology. Then, the HCMC People's Committee signed with France a MoU on cooperation in air quality control to cope with the environmental challenges of sustainable development in the city.
Accordingly, both sides will share their knowledge and technical expertise to launch an air quality control program in the city, establish an air quality monitor system, and devise measures to prevent and mitigate air pollution.

HCMC and the French Consulate General will cooperate in workforce training for air quality management, as well as launching specific projects within the MoU framework, including mobilizing and allocating France’s financial aid to promote progress in environmental protection and climate change response.
The forum also provided time for bilateral contacts between a number of French businesses and representatives of Vietnamese state agencies and private partners to seek opportunities in promising fields.
It is known that following the activities of the 45th anniversary of French-Vietnamese diplomatic relations establishment on July 5 and 6, 2018, the French delegation will meet and work with ministry representatives and leaders of the Hanoi People's Committee, as well as enterprises in the north of Vietnam to discuss potential cooperation projects.
Recently, HCMC has launched the smart urban plan for 2017-2020 with a vision to 2025. The fact shows that this ambitious project can be successfully implemented with the consent of the government, the private individuals, citizens and especially international cooperation programs.
For decades, France has committed itself to supporting Vietnam through the implementation of capacity building and tooling projects in urban planning and management, sustainable growth and life quality improvement in the cities. The typical ones are the programs of the Center for Urban Forecasting and Research.
