Hungary president visits Vietnam in 11 years

Hungary is one of the first countries establishing diplomatic ties with Vietnam, since 1950 and the Central European country is the biggest provider of scholarships to Vietnamese students.

THE HANOI TIMES — Hungary’s President Sulyok Tamas was welcomed in Hanoi this morning [May 28] for his three-day official visit to Vietnam, the first paid by a Hungarian leader after 11 years.

The visit comes at a time when the two countries celebrate the 75th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties this year.

Sulyok Tamas and his spouse Nagy Zsuzsanna were warmly received by Vietnamese President Luong Cuong and his wife Nguyen Thi Minh Nguyet.

The two countries upgraded the relations to Comprehensive Partnership in September 2018.

In 2024, two-way trade hit US$932 million, up 10% year-on-year.

Hungary has helped train approximately 4,000 Vietnamese experts and has provided the largest number of scholarships to Vietnamese students.

The country is also home to a Vietnamese community of 6,000 people.
