Major infrastructure projects launched on Phu Quoc to prepare for APEC 2027

The $302-million projects cover transport, infrastructure and resettlement, marking significant preparations by An Giang Province for the APEC 2027 Economic Leaders' Week in Phu Quoc.

THE HANOI TIMES — The government of An Giang Province on September 24 began construction of seven large-scale infrastructure projects worth VND8 trillion (US$302.8 million) on Phu Quoc Island.

These projects aim to strengthen the island’s infrastructure and prepare for the APEC 2027 Economic Leaders’ Week.

The largest project is the 20-kilometer DT.975 provincial road linking Phu Quoc International Airport with DT.973 provincial road. With an investment of VND2.5 trillion (US$95 million), it is expected to boost regional connectivity.

Another key project is the Cua Can reservoir, costing more than VND1 trillion (US$38 million), to secure sustainable water supply for the island.

Other projects include the embankment and land reclamation for the APEC Conference Center, worth VND1.4 trillion (US$53 million), and the An Thoi resettlement area covering 23.8 hectares with an investment of VND1.6 trillion (US$62 million).

Local authorities also started two underground technical infrastructure projects with a combined investment of VND970 billion (US$37 million) and a smart operations and monitoring center worth VND500 billion (US$19 million).

On the same day, the provincial government commenced three more projects: the Bai Bon waste treatment plant, the An Thoi solid waste treatment plant and the Cua Can reservoir water plant. Together, they total nearly VND1.1 trillion (US$41.6 million).

Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Chi Dung stressed that the APEC 2027 Economic Leaders’ Week is a major political event enhancing Vietnam’s standing and global image.

He urged ministries, An Giang Province and investors to accelerate construction, ensure quality, finish the projects three to six months early and maintain transparency throughout implementation.

On behalf of investors, Bui Thanh Trung, Chairman of Sun Group Southern Region, pledged to mobilize all resources and expertise to deliver projects to international standards, creating long-term benefits for the community.

Scheduled for November 2027 in Phu Quoc, the APEC Economic Leaders’ Week will gather around 12,000 participants, including senior leaders, government officials, and business representatives from 21 APEC economies.

The event offers Vietnam an opportunity to highlight its role as an active and responsible member of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Forum and to strengthen bilateral and multilateral ties.
