Market managers share tips on safe shopping
Choosing products with clear origins helps consumers avoid the risk of buying counterfeit and fake goods.
THE HANOI TIMES — Consumers’ shopping decision affects themselves and impacts the whole society. Therefore, smart and responsible consumers are the "line of defense" to help push back counterfeit and fake goods.
Hoang Thi Dieu Hong, Head of the Trade Management Division under the Hanoi Department of Industry and Trade, shared at the online talk show "Say no to counterfeit and poor quality goods", organized by the Kinh te & Do thi (Economic and Urban) Newspaper on July 25.
Hong recommended that, first of all, a consumer needs to know how to check the origin, source and quality of the product before deciding to buy.

"Choosing products with clear origins not only helps consumers avoid the risk of buying counterfeit and fake goods, but ensures health safety. Carefully researching product information before buying is an important principle," said the official.
Referring to reviews from reputable sources or previous users helps consumers make accurate decisions. They should beware of fake websites, avoid sharing personal information with unreliable sources, and shop on platforms with clear customer protection policies.
“Understanding your rights is crucial to protect yourself from risks,” Hong emphasized.
The Law on Consumer Protection 2023 grants individuals the right to safety, honest information, product choice, and the right to complain and request compensation for poor-quality products. “Knowing and exercising these rights helps consumers stay proactive,” she said.
According to Duong Manh Hung, Deputy Director of the Hanoi Market Surveillance Agency, consumers buying e-commerce products should choose reputable platforms and sellers and consult feedback from previous customers.
Manufacturers should apply information technology to manage product origins so consumers can easily verify authenticity.
“Counterfeit goods are increasingly sophisticated, especially online. Offenders often hide under covers or operate in suburban areas, making inspection difficult. Customers must be extremely careful,” said Hung.
