Myanmar coup: Vietnam calls for end of violence

Vietnam says ASEAN is willing to support Myanmar on the basis of ASEAN Charter, ending the situation and protect civilians.

Vietnam has called on all parties in Myanmar to exercise utmost restraint and pursue constructive dialogues for a peaceful solution and practical reconciliation for the country.

Vietnam, as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council in the 2020-2021 term, highlighted the need to end the situation and protect civilians.

Speaking at the Security Council’s virtual meeting on March 10, Vietnam emphasized ASEAN’s efforts in promoting dialogues and seeking solutions for the bloc’s member state, noting that ASEAN is willing to support Myanmar on the basis of ASEAN Charter.

At the meeting, the Security Council issued the Presidential Statement, expressing concern about developments in the Southeast Asian country.

In the statement that was issued by the representative of the US, Council President for March, the 15-member organ strongly condemned the violence against peaceful protesters.

It expressed deep concern over restrictions against medical personnel, civil society, labor union members, journalists and media workers, and called for the immediate release of all those detained arbitrarily.

Council members expressed continued support for the democratic transition in Myanmar, stressing the need to uphold democratic institutions and processes, refrain from violence, and fully respect human rights and the rule of law.

The Security Council also reiterated its support to the Special Envoy of the Secretary-General on Myanmar for her good offices, encouraged her to maintain communication and her efforts to engage intensively with all relevant parties in Myanmar, and to visit Myanmar as soon as possible.

They reiterated strong support for ASEAN, welcoming in particular, statements made by its Chair on March 2 and February 1, which recalled the ASEAN Charter principles of democracy, adherence to the rule of law and good governance, among others.
