National Day celebrations drive Hanoi CPI up strongly in August

Hanoi’s economy shows steady inflation as CPI climbs 3.4% in eight months, driven by healthcare, housing, tourism and holiday demand.

THE HANOI TIMES — Hanoi’s Consumer Price Index (CPI) in August  increased by 0.2% from the previous month and nearly 4% year-on-year, according to the city's Statistics Office.

All 11 commodity groups saw price hikes in August. Culture, entertainment and tourism rose 0.6% due to a surge of visitors during celebrations of the 80th anniversary of the August Revolution and National Day.

Food and catering services increased 0.4%, mainly driven by higher dining-out expenses, while education rose 0.2% as students prepared for the new school year.

During the four-day National Day holiday, Hanoi welcomed an estimated 2.1 million visitors, triple the figure from the same period last year.

This strong influx of tourists further fueled higher demand in culture, entertainment, and dining services.

On average, CPI in the first eight months rose 3.4% compared to the same period in 2024. Eight out of 11 groups recorded increases.

Health services jumped the most at 15% following hospital fee adjustments, housing, electricity, water, fuel, and construction materials rose 8.2%, and food and catering services climbed 2.8%.

Meanwhile, transport, education and post-telecommunications were down between 0.8% and 2.9% after eight months.

In August, gold prices in Hanoi rose 1.3% from the previous month, with the eight-month average soaring 47.6% year-on-year.

The US dollar index grew 0.4% in August and averaged an increase of 3.5% in the first eight months.
