New Year calm reveals a quieter Hanoi

As 2026 began, Hanoi briefly set aside its familiar rush, revealing a quieter city shaped by light, space and unhurried movement.

THE HANOI TIMES On the first day of the year, Hanoi took on an unusually calm rhythm, a contrast to the dense traffic and constant motion that typically define the capital.

Streets normally packed with motorbikes were marked by light traffic, replaced by pedestrians and soft morning light.

Without congestion or sidewalk vendors, Hanoi reveals a spare, almost meditative streetscape.

Red-and-yellow national flags lined empty boulevards, turning familiar intersections into composed, painterly scenes.

Residents move through the city at an easy pace, pausing to take photos or simply observe the moment.

Some exercise along major roads rarely this open.

Others stop to photograph decorative installations welcoming the upcoming Lunar Year of the Horse.

Daily routines continue, but against a backdrop rarely seen in the capital.
