New Zealand offers school scholarships to Vietnamese students

The New Zealand School Scholarships program broadens access for Vietnamese students by offering more government scholarships, flexible language requirements and pathways into New Zealand’s diverse secondary education system.

THE HANOI TIMES — New Zealand will offer scholarships for Vietnamese secondary students to study in the country in 2026, continuing education cooperation between the two countries, according to governmental agency Education New Zealand.

Under the New Zealand Schools Scholarships (NZSS) program, Vietnamese students in grades 8-10 with strong academic records and English proficiency are eligible to apply. The application period runs from January 5 to March 22.

Applicants are required to submit academic transcripts and a short personal video, while English-language certificates may be provided later in the selection process. Candidates may also be invited to interviews or English assessments.

Launched in 2019, the NZSS program has supported Vietnamese students in accessing secondary education at partner schools across New Zealand.

The NZSS 2026 program partners with 56 high-quality secondary schools across multiple regions of New Zealand, including public and private institutions, traditional single-sex schools and co-educational schools.

The scholarship program comes amid growing education links between Vietnam and New Zealand. According to Vietnam’s Ministry of Education and Training, nearly 250,000 Vietnamese citizens were studying abroad as of September 2025.

Education New Zealand reported that more than 1,900 Vietnamese students studied in New Zealand in 2024, with enrollments continuing to rise, particularly at the university level.
