No exceptions in Hanoi’s fight against counterfeit goods and smuggling

Hanoi authorities will continue to step up activities against smuggling, production and consumption of counterfeit goods.

THE HANOI TIMES — said Nguyen Manh Quyen, Vice Chairman of the Municipal People’s Committee, at the conference on July 18 on combating counterfeit goods and smuggling in the last months of 2025.

Quyen requested that in the coming time, member units of the Hanoi Steering Committee 389 must strengthen inspections of key areas, fields, and products, especially e-commerce businesses and products that directly affect people's health.

“The coordination and information exchange between functional forces must improve to proactively prevent and combat new methods, especially online,” the official said. This supports enforcement agencies in controlling and monitoring food quality on the market and arranging specialized evidence warehouses with storage suited to seized goods like food, cosmetics and electronics.

“The Standing Office of the Hanoi 389 Steering Committee must work with departments to review and upgrade inspection centers and equip quality inspection vehicles to quickly test goods during inspections,” Quyen emphasized.

A Hanoi Customs Department representative noted smugglers hide gold bars and foreign currencies in luggage and express packages, turning airports, post offices and delivery apps into transit points for illegal goods.

From now to the end of 2025, Hanoi will intensify efforts against smuggling and counterfeit production and consumption, focusing on essential goods, banned goods, high-value items, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals and functional foods.

According to the Hanoi 389 Steering Committee, in the first half of 2025 the city’s functional forces inspected and arrested nearly 9,600 cases, handling over 8,500 smuggling, counterfeit and trade fraud violations.
