Old Hanoi space comes alive with 'Memories of Hanoi - 70 Years' exhibition

This is an activity to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the liberation of the capital under the auspices of the Hoan Kiem District People's Committee and the Management Board of Hoan Kiem Lake and Hanoi Old Quarter.

The moment when soldiers marched into Hanoi on October 10, 1954, has been vividly recreated on the wall along Phung Hung Street, evoking a sense of pride and emotion among the public.

In celebration of the 70th anniversary of the capital's liberation and the 25th anniversary of Hanoi being designated a "City for Peace" by UNESCO, the Hoan Kiem District People's Committee organized the "Memories of Hanoi - 70 Years" program to recreate the atmosphere of the city during the period from 1947 to 1954.

Speaking at the opening ceremony of the event on October 4, Deputy Chairman of the Hoan Kiem District People's Committee, Nguyen Quoc Hoan, stated: "October 10, 1954, is a pivotal milestone in the history of the capital's construction and development, marking a significant turning point and ushering in a new era in the thousand-year history of Thang Long-Dong Do-Hanoi."

According to Hoan, Thang Long-Hanoi has witnessed several glorious historical periods since King Ly Thai To issued the "Edict on the Transfer of the Capital" in 1010. The liberation of Hanoi from French colonialists on October 10, 1954, marked the beginning of a new era of growth for both the nation and the city.

"Reflecting on the footage and photos from October 10, 70 years ago, we are deeply moved and proud of the indomitable spirit of the army and the people of Hanoi, including the residents of Hoan Kiem District, in their fight against the invaders," Hoan remarked.

The program "Memories of Hanoi - 70 Years" features exhibitions and cultural activities that will take place until October 13 at the Mural Space on Phung Hung Street, recreating the atmosphere of old Hanoi in the Old Quarter during the period of national resistance.

The program aims to introduce both residents and tourists to a significant historical period of the nation, fostering a sense of pride and encouraging citizens to engage in meaningful actions that contribute to the construction of the capital.

As the highlight of this series of activities, Hoan Kiem District, in collaboration with Xua va Nay (Past and Present) Magazine, organized an archival photo exhibition titled "Hoan Kiem District - Historical Images." This exhibition showcases vintage photographs of Hoan Kiem District during a decade filled with challenges and triumphs, spanning from the August Revolution in 1945 to the liberation of the capital on October 10, 1954.
