PM Phuc and President Trump held talks to enhance Vietnam- the US relationship

President Donald Trump expects that the bilateral ties between Vietnam and the US will continue strong development course in future during his talks with PM Nguyen Xuan Phuc in Washington D.C on May 31.

President Trump affirmed that he attaches importance to the relations with Vietnam as well as the role played by Vietnam and ASEAN in the region. PM Phuc expressed thanks for warm welcome and hospitality that President Trump and the US Administration extended to him, affirming Viet Nam also attaches importance to the comprehensive partnership with the US.

The two leaders showed their pleasure at the deep and broad advancement of the
Vietnam-US comprehensive partnership in various fields and in both bilateral and multi-lateral aspects. Both sides vowed to continue their joint efforts to promote the bilateral ties in a stable, long-term and constructive manner for mutual benefits and for peace, stability, cooperation and development in Asia-Pacific and the world with respect to the UN Charter, international law and to each others’ independence, sovereignty, territorial integrity and political system.

The two leaders discussed on measures to further deepen the bilateral relations, including delegation exchanges, especially high-level delegations and contacts, and improvement of the effectiveness of the current cooperation mechanisms while considering the establishment of new mechanisms in line with the development of the relationship in the new stage.

PM Phuc and President Trump agreed to work together to accelerate economic ties for mutual benefits, affirming that development cooperation still remains a pillar of economic and trade relations between the two countries.

 



PM Phuc reiterated Vietnam’s determination to pursue economic reform and international integration, enhance economic-trade-investment with the US. He suggested both sides mull over the establishment of value chain to exploit the complementary advantages of the two economies.

President Trump welcomed the official visit to the US by PM Phuc and the high-ranking Vietnamese delegation, affirming that he attaches importance to Vietnam-US relations as well as the role of Vietnam and ASEAN in the region. He said he wants the two countries’ ties to continue developing strongly in the time ahead.

PM Phuc acknowledged the warm welcome of President Trump and the US administration, stressing that Vietnam treasures its comprehensive partnership with the US and highly values recent steps taken by the Trump administration to implement the policy towards the Asian-Pacific region.

The two leaders noted with satisfaction the extensive development of the Vietnam-US comprehensive partnership in various spheres, both bilaterally and multilaterally, and shared the view that there remain a number of opportunities for bilateral ties.

They affirmed the commitment to keeping efforts to boost Vietnam-US relations in a stable, long-term, constructive and mutual beneficiary fashion, which will not only benefit the two countries but also peace, stability, cooperation and development in Asia-Pacific and the world, on the basis of compliance with the UN Charter and international law, respect for each other’s independence, sovereignty, territorial integrity and political regime.

 



Regarding ways to enhance the countries’ connections, they agreed to increase delegation exchanges and meetings, especially at high level, improve the effectiveness of existing cooperation mechanisms, and consider the establishment of new cooperation mechanisms that suit the expansion of bilateral ties in the new period. PM Phuc and President Trump agreed to join efforts to boost win-win economic partnership. They emphasised that development cooperation remains a focus in the economic-trade relations between Vietnam and the US.

PM Phuc affirmed Vietnam’s resolve to press on with economic restructuring and integration into the world, and stepping up the two countries’ win-win cooperation in economy, trade and investment. He asked both sides consider the formation of a value chain from production to consumption to make use of the two economies’ complementary feature.

President Trump welcomed the settlement of some prioritised trade issues, including the opening of their markets for each other’s agricultural and industrial products and information technology products and services. The two leaders agreed on effective implementation of the framework agreement on trade and investment to settle related issues emerging in the two countries’ economic relations based on a constructive and fair spirit that benefit all.

They also agreed to step up cooperation in humanitarian matters, overcoming the war consequences, defense and security among others. The pair affirmed that the two countries share common interests in Asia-Pacific, including maintaining peace, stability, cooperation and development in the region.

The two leaders underlined the importance of freedom navigation and aviation in the East Sea, voicing support for peaceful resolution of disputes on the basis of international law, including full respect for diplomatic and legal processes. They welcomed progress in the talks on a Code of Conduct in the East Sea. The two leaders also affirmed their support for a non-nuclear Korean peninsula and all relevant parties must seriously implement UN Security Council’s related resolutions.

PM Phuc took the occasion to invite President Trump and his family to pay an official visit to Vietnam and attend the APEC economic leaders’ week. President Donald Trump accepted the invitation with pleasure.​
